“French’s broken-up monologue style is evocative and ambiguous. Tortured relationships give you a freedom the characters do not have: freedom to draw your own conclusions.” – Karen Bell, Performing Arts & Entertainment in Canada
I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre (Directing) from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, and a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
My plays have been developed, workshopped, and performed in Toronto, Canada. I was Playwright in Residence at Factory Theatre in 1999/2000 and a member of Factory Theatre’s Playwrights Lab in 1998/99.
“Beth French can write convincingly for an amazing range of voices and extreme situations…. When the play ended, I was sitting there in tears, clapping like a mad thing.” – Anna Claybourne, The Variety Review
My articles have been published in The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star newspapers. I wrote a popular fitness blog from 2011 to 2014 posting stories, articles, and in-depth interviews with athletes from the worlds of competitive powerlifting, bodybuilding, boxing, and other sports. My current blog explores themes of change, survival, perspective, and tolerance.
I worked for many years as a law clerk. I live in Toronto where I raised my son, Will French.
